I stayed up most of the night working on the blog, and when I did sleep, I was up by 6am to finish it. I grabbed a quick shower and then was
waiting on BJ's porch by 7:30am. I killed time by working on my laptop. Reagan showed up at 8am and waited with me, but amazingly enough no one was
up until about 8:30. Jason came and opened the door for us; I guess they had decided not to work out that day.
Instead, Reagan broke out the massage table and worked on Jason's back; BJ wasn't up as of yet. It wasn't much longer till he was, and as he waited
his turn for the table, I had him read over the blog that I wrote and upon his approval, posted it on the site. It was pouring down rain outside,
just like it had every morning this week. I promised the guys sun would peek through the clouds and that the skies would clear shortly.
As BJ was taking his turn on the massage table, many well wishers called on my cell so I put them on speaker phone to chat with him. The first was
Chael Sonnen.. They talked a bit about Chael's impending fight with Paulo Filho, and then BJ's fight with Sherk. BJ asked me how Gabe Ruediger was
doing, so we got him on the phone too. Gabe told BJ, "I had neck surgery recently but am now back in the gym lightly training." After a few minutes
of conversation, Gabe asked BJ, "So where's the afterparty going to be?" BJ responded,"I don't think I'm even going to have an afterparty. I'm
really just concentrating on the fight."
I went into the kitchen and sliced up the pineapple that I had bought at the market two days prior. It was perfectly ripe and sweet; everyone
quickly dug in to the delicious pile of fruit.
Leroy came over and made breakfast; hash browns, onions and eggs again. We ate and then relaxed at the house a couple hours before we took a trip
down to the beach to enjoy the day. It was pretty warm out so BJ and Shae didn't stay more than an hour; Jason, Reagan, Hoyt and I hung out for a
bit longer and basked in the sun.
On the way back, Hoyt took a detour and drove me on the scenic route around Hilo. This was what I truly imagined Hawaii looking like with overgrown
jungle and waterfalls. It was raining intermittantly unfortunatly, so we didn't stop to take photos. We would go from being completely sunny one
minute to pouring down rain the next. I kept looking for a rainbow, but alas never saw one.
We stopped at Blaine's for a plate lunch (wasn't the best I'd had in Hilo) and then we made our way back to the house where I took a little time to
ask BJ some questions about the upcoming fight.
Me: How are you feeling about this fight? Do you feel you are prepared to face Sherk on May 24th?
BJ: Fully prepared. I have been training a lot for this fight; more so than any fight in the past. I feel like I am ready now and could fight
tomorrow if need be. Sean Sherk better watch out.
Me: Tell me about your camp and your training partners.
BJ: I have been training with Jason Parillo. This is my third fight with him. He's a former professional boxer. I also have Adam Disabato out here
for wrestling, and have had many other guys fly in and join my camp over the last few months. I'm still working with Rudy Valentino as well.
Me: I saw you do an interview this week in Hilo. The questions all had the same answer: Your disgust over Sean Sherk's alleged steroid use. Care to
expand on that?
BJ: It makes me mad. Sean Sherk's a cheater. In the wild west, when you get caught with an ace up your sleeve, you're dead. That's why I say that
Sean Sherk is dead.
Me: He recently said that you have no heart. How do you feel about that?
BJ: You can't confuse steroids for heart. I want the kids out there to know that you can get all of this with hard work and not have to cheat. How
can you be a champion if you had to cheat to get there?
Me: And other alleged steroid users?
BJ: I going to call them out and beat them up, one by one.
Me: Your sitting pretty steady around 164. How much do you want to weigh when you get to Vegas prior to cutting weight?
BJ: I want to weigh about 159 and then cut 4lbs of water. Should be simple.
Me: No more Sulfates?
BJ: Lol, yeah, no more sulfates.
Me: Any last things you want to say?
BJ: Yes, Sean Sherk, watch out. This is how the west was won.
We finished up the mini interview and the rest of the day was spent relaxing at the house. Leroy came over and fixed an afternoon meal and BJ and
his girlfriend watched movies. I walked over to Mr Penn's house and packed my stuff; it was time for me to go back to reality (of sorts). I went to
say goodbye to everyone and then Hoyt dropped me off at the airport.
Another great trip. I love going out to Hilo and visiting BJ and his camp. He's training harder than he ever has before, and it shows. May 24th is
going to be an exciting night and I am definitely looking forward to it! I tried to stay awake as I flew from Hilo back to the mainland, but when
it comes to flying, I'm like a baby in a car seat; I go right to sleep!
I ended up seeing Gabe Ruediger at the Grand Opening on Millenia MMA on Saturday afternoon. He said, "BJ was saying he was curbing his partying and
needed to focus on fighting while on TUF. The fact that he told me that there would be no afterparty told me he was serious about this fight and
focusing."
Notes:
BJ's not doing steroids, although there has been talk on the message boards that he looks huge. He's in some of the best shape of his life and is
taking this fight VERY seriously.
The mood of the camp, although still light hearted, was MUCH more serious than my first trip to Hilo.
It rained every night in Hilo, and cleared up everyday by midmorning.
There were a number of fighters at BJs gym getting ready for upcoming fights including Kendall Grove and Jason Tan.
BJ's day to day routine includes strength and conditioning every morning, active rest all day, then a evening session that consisted of hitting
pads, grappling, or jujitsu.
BJ's Mom, Dad, and two of his brothers all live on the same street in different houses. I stayed at Mr Penn's house. This is where Reagan and Naomi
live.
